Sorting

Efficient Sorting of Metal Scrap

The sorting of metal scrap is a crucial step in the recycling process that offers significant ecological and economic benefits. Through careful separation of the different metal types, valuable resources can be recovered and environmental impact reduced.

Various technical processes and equipment are available for separating scrap, enabling efficient and precise sorting.

Magnetic Separation

Application: Separation of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Technology:

  • Belt magnets: These magnets are mounted on conveyor belts and attract ferromagnetic metals such as iron and steel, while non-ferrous metals are conveyed further.
  • Drum magnets: These rotate and separate ferromagnetic metals from other materials by attracting them and ejecting them into a separate container.

Eddy Current Separators

Application: Separation of non-ferrous metals (e.g., aluminum, copper) from non-metallic materials.

Technology:

  • Function: A rotating magnetic field induces eddy currents in the non-ferrous metals, which are repelled and separated from the non-metallic materials.

Density Sorting

Application: Separation of metals by their density.

Technology:

  • Sink-float process: This method uses liquids with different densities to separate metals. Metals with higher density sink, while those with lower density float.
  • Drum sorters: These machines use dense liquids or air streams to sort materials by density.

Sensor-Based Sorting

Application: Precise separation of different metal types and impurities.

Technology:

  • Induction sensors: These sensors detect metal types based on their electrical properties.
  • Spectroscopy: Optical sensors analyze the light reflected by metals to determine their composition and sort them accordingly.

Size Reduction Systems

Application: Preparation of large metal pieces for further sorting.

Technology:

  • Shredders: Reduce large scrap pieces into smaller fragments that are easier to handle and sort.
  • Hammer mills: Crush metals using rotating hammers to prepare them for subsequent sorting processes.

Drum Screens and Vibrating Screens

Application: Separation of scrap by size and shape.

Technology:

  • Drum screens: Rotating drums with various screen sizes separate materials by their size.
  • Vibrating screens: Use vibrations to separate materials of different sizes.
