ARNO® Break C
Breaking cast scrap instead of cutting and shredding.
Highlights
- Breaking instead of cutting and shredding – almost no tool wear, only low-cost replaceable teeth
- Three sizes C 400 · C 600 · C 900 with 4,000 to 9,000 kN breaking force in the jaw area
- Capacity up to 24 t/h (material-dependent), cycle time > 35 s
- Briquette-like, furnace-ready pieces < 300 mm – low burn-off, high melting yield
- Multiple breaking cycles for high-strength parts, breaking jaws 600, 800 or 1,000 mm high
- Enclosed breaking process with swivel lid, safe tipping discharge to SIL 3 / PL e
- Fail-safe PLC, radio remote control and predictive maintenance via app
The ARNO® Break C dismantles massive cast and metal parts such as gearbox housings, engine blocks and cast scrap by controlled breaking: serrated breaking arms close like pliers and break the brittle material along its natural fracture lines. The breaking chamber then tips open hydraulically and the pieces fall out safely. Batch-wise operation reacts flexibly to changing material and fluctuating volumes – ideal for foundries, scrapyards and electric steel mills.
Grey cast iron and ductile cast iron are hard and brittle — cutting tools wear out quickly and uneconomically on them. Instead, the ARNO® Break C crushes engine blocks, brake drums and other cast parts by breaking: this saves tool costs and produces manageable fragments for transport and melting.

Your Advantages at a Glance
Breaking instead of cutting
Controlled breaking with serrated breaking arms – without cutting sparks, with almost no tool wear and low operating costs per tonne. Additional breaking cycles on the same material reliably break even high-strength parts.
Smart Recycling Systems
Remote monitoring, live diagnostics and predictive maintenance via app for higher availability.
Robust replaceable teeth
Replaceable, highly wear-resistant teeth for tough continuous operation.
Safe tipping discharge
The hydraulically tipping breaking chamber (SIL 3 / PL e) ensures that broken parts fall out safely.
Flexible response to changing material and fluctuating capacities.
Breaking jaws 600, 800 or 1,000 mm high – to suit the size of the parts.
ARNO® Break C
Three sizes based on the same low-wear jaw breaking principle: C 400 for smaller castings, cylinder heads, brake discs and brake drums (up to 10 t/h), C 600 as an all-round model for cast sumps, pump and gearbox housings (up to 16 t/h) and C 900 for massive engine blocks and the heaviest cast scrap (up to 24 t/h). Containerised hydraulics, minimal foundation work.

Breaking instead of cutting – how it works
The ARNO® Break C dismantles massive cast and metal parts by controlled breaking – more economical and gentler on tools than shearing or shredding.
Loading
Gearbox housings, engine blocks or cast scrap are loaded into the breaking chamber via the swivel lid.
Closing the jaws
The serrated breaking arms close like pliers and break the brittle material with up to 9,000 kN.
Tipping & discharge
The breaking chamber tips open hydraulically and the broken pieces fall out safely.
Foundries & green steel
Foundries and electric steel mills need dense, furnace-ready scrap – broken cast scrap is an ideal feedstock.
Optimum melting geometry
Controlled breaking produces briquette-like pieces below 300 mm – ideal furnace size and better handling.
Higher melting yield
Compact, dense pieces reduce burn-off and speed up the melting process.
Growing scrap demand
The switch to electric arc furnaces is sharply increasing demand for high-quality, dense scrap.

Scrap shears and shredders also process mixed scrap, sheet metal and beams – the cast breaker is deliberately specialised in brittle, high-strength cast material.
What a tonne really costs
Same task, same calculation: 20,000 t of cast scrap per year, total costs over 8 years divided by 160,000 t.
ARNO® Break C 600
20,000 t/year cast scrap · 8 years
compared to the scrap shear, €1.15 m compared to the shredder
at 20,000 t/year and approx. €20 added value per tonne
at 30,000 t/year and approx. €20 added value per tonne
Example calculation – actual values depend on the project, material and market. Added value = better melting yield and lower burn-off plus saved cutting, shearing and shredding costs. We are happy to prepare your individual economic calculation.
