Technical Support & Application Engineering

The purchase is the beginning of the relationship — not its end.

Technical Support and Application Engineering accompany your plant from commissioning through ongoing operation to modernization — with the goal of permanently securing availability, throughput, process quality and investment value. Both areas are networked with our own Test & Competence Center, engineering, spare parts management and the Smart Recycling Systems.

Positioning · Core Understanding

The Sale Is the Start of the Relationship

For ATM, the business relationship doesn’t end with delivery — it’s only just beginning. While low-cost providers are often interested only in the sale itself, ATM accompanies its customers as a strategic partner throughout the entire lifecycle of the plant.

Support From Commissioning

At ATM, the purchase agreement marks the beginning of a strategic partnership over the entire operating life — not its end.

Integration With the Test Center

Findings from trials and material analyses feed directly into optimizing customer processes.

Future-Proofing Through Knowledge

Training on plant technology and process technology keeps operating personnel working at maximum efficiency, permanently.

Service Block 1 · Troubleshooting

Technical Troubleshooting

The goal is maximum plant availability: faults are quickly narrowed down, precisely resolved, and eliminated at their root cause. After structured fault intake, a qualified technician provides an initial technical assessment. Via remote access, the control system, alarms, operating data and process curves can be analyzed. If remote diagnostics aren’t sufficient, an ATM technician comes to you directly with a matched parts and tooling package. You speak with technicians who know your plant — with a complete machine history and access to design documents, maintenance manuals and the control program, instead of an anonymous call center.

Process · From Call to Resolution

How a Support Case Works

A defined path with clear escalation levels — each level is only invoked once the previous one hasn’t solved the problem.

Report

By phone or email; the fault pattern, machine number and operating state are recorded.

HelpDesk

Initial technical assessment by a technician — response within 24 hours.

Remote Diagnostics

Access to the control system and machine data via the ATM portal, targeted diagnostic steps.

On-Site Deployment

Technician with a matching parts package, coordinated with the spare parts warehouse and production.

Follow-Up

Documentation, root-cause elimination and — where useful — an optimization recommendation.

Service Block 2 · Optimization

Plant & Technology Optimization

Material properties, volumes, target qualities and legal requirements change over the course of operation. ATM’s application engineering ensures your plant stays optimally set up for them. Our experts analyze the entire material flow — from feed to discharge — and optimize press pressures, cycle times, cutting and crushing parameters, recipes, energy use, automation and wear behavior. Optimization is not a one-off project — it continues throughout the lifecycle whenever material, volume or target quality change.

Process Parameters

Press pressures, cycle times, cutting and crushing parameters adjusted to your actual material.

Throughput & Yield

Bottlenecks in the material flow identified and eliminated — from feed to discharge.

Safety Engineering

Safety assessment for plant modifications, new material streams and peripheral equipment.

Energy & Sustainability

Specific energy use per ton, idle times and standby behavior.

Wear Behavior

Tooling and lining concept matched to your material — Hardox® partnership.

Control & Automation

PLC program, recipes and interfaces to plant control systems fine-tuned.

Expertise · Everything From a Single Source

Six-Fold Technical Expertise

Recycling plants are systems, not standalone machines. That’s why ATM Support bundles six disciplines in a single team — instead of six separate points of responsibility.

Mechanics

Frames, cylinders, tools, linings, clearances and torque specifications.

Hydraulics

System pressure, pumps, accumulators, hose service life, oil condition and filtration.

Electrics

Drives, switchgear, sensors, safety circuits and protective equipment.

PLC Technology

Machine program, visualization, recipes, data interfaces, updates.

Process Technology

Material behavior, target quality, throughput, yield and post-processing.

Safety Engineering

Protective equipment, safety circuits, CE conformity and legal requirements.

Why This Matters

A fault on a press is rarely purely mechanical. Treating hydraulics, electrics and PLC separately just shifts the problem instead of solving it.

The Difference vs. Low-Cost Providers

They often offer only basic knowledge of standard components — the operator is left alone to deal with the actual system-level questions.

Service Block 3 · Knowledge Transfer

Training: Expertise at the Customer

The best plant only performs as well as the operating staff can make it. ATM trains operators, maintenance staff and process managers directly on the plant, at the Test & Competence Center in Fohnsdorf, or remotely — from initial instruction at commissioning to recurring refresher training. Digital repair and operating guides with videos and images preserve the knowledge even after training, in your language.

Operator Training

Plant operation, operating modes, fault acknowledgment and safe handling — directly on the machine.

Maintenance Staff Training

Maintenance scopes, inspection points, hydraulics and electrics fundamentals, wear assessment.

Technology Training

Process technology: material behavior, target qualities, recipes and process limits.

Service Block 4 · Tooling

Tooling Optimization & Premium Wear Protection

For briquetting presses, ATM develops material-specific pressing tools whose geometry and material are matched to the customer’s substrate. For Arno®Shred, a wide portfolio of different blade geometries is available, up to carbide versions. Replaceable inserts on Arno®Cut and Arno®Break shorten repair and changeover times. As an official SSAB Hardox® wear plate partner, ATM uses high-quality wear plates in grades Hardox® 450 to 600 for tools and chamber linings — for longer service life, reproducible product quality and higher yield.

Service Block 5 · Safety Engineering

Legally Compliant Operation — Even After Modifications

Industrial plants in metal recycling are subject to strict, continually tightening safety and environmental regulations. For expanded processes, new material streams or altered peripheral equipment, ATM’s expert team assesses the impact on the entire system — not just the individual machine. For in-depth modernizations, ATM handles the complete safety-engineering overhaul as part of RetroFIT projects, right through to new CE marking — including changes for noise, dust or operator protection.

The Difference vs. Low-Cost Providers: Whoever merely sells the plant supports neither the modification nor the new legal situation. Safety-engineering responsibility then remains entirely with the operator.

Test & Competence Center · Fohnsdorf

Support and Application Engineering in One Place

At company headquarters in Fohnsdorf, state-of-the-art recycling technology is available on a single site — briquetting press, shredder, sorting and analysis technology, individually or as an integrated system. Your actual material, not assumptions, is the basis of every reliable design: measurements, photos and results are documented and form the basis for a tailored process, the right machine configuration and dependable performance targets. Findings from the test center flow directly back into technical support — and vice versa.

In Comparison

ATM Lifecycle Support Compared to Low-Cost Providers

What matters is not the lowest purchase price, but reliable performance per ton of output over many years.

Customer Expectation The ATM Lifecycle Support Typical Risk With Low-Cost Providers
High Plant Availability Direct expert contact, structured support process, remote diagnostics and on-site service Poor availability, unclear responsibilities and long delays
Holistic Expertise Six disciplines from a single source: mechanics, hydraulics, electrics, PLC, process technology and safety Often only basic knowledge of standard components; system-level problems are left to the operator
Future-Proofing Ongoing process, tooling and plant optimization plus RetroFIT Little technological advancement or adaptation after the sale
Clear Communication Direct contact, complete documentation and traceable solutions Language barriers, incomplete documentation and difficult fault description
Competent Personnel Role-based training and digital guides Little knowledge transfer; customers are left alone with complex processes
Legal Compliance Assessment of changes, safety-engineering updates and CE support Responsibility for modifications and new legal situations often lies entirely with the operator
Lifecycle Costs Focus on availability, service life, efficiency and upgradability A low entry price can become expensive through failures, spare parts issues and a shorter service life
