ATM Service & Service Contract

From unpredictable risk to a plannable value driver.

Maintenance turns from an unpredictable risk into a plannable value driver. An ATM service contract for high-performance metal recycling systems combines preventive maintenance, OEM expert knowledge, digital support, and seamless documentation. The goal: maximum availability, consistently high system performance, and significantly more predictable total operating costs for balers, shears, and briquetting systems.

Starting Point · Why Service Makes the Difference

Wear begins long before downtime

In demanding metal recycling operations, shock loads, pressure surges, dust, abrasion, and constant load changes act simultaneously on the mechanics, hydraulics, and controls. Regular inspections detect wear before it leads to unplanned downtime or costly consequential damage. ATM supports your system with qualified technicians straight from the manufacturer throughout its entire lifecycle.

Scope of Services · Five Building Blocks

The main components of ATM Service

Building Block 1 · System Service

Annual system service

The service is performed after 2,000 operating hours, but at least once a year. ATM inspects the entire system, checks functions and parameters, and readjusts the machine to optimal factory settings if needed. Depending on the system type, the standardized checklist covers more than 120 checkpoints in the areas of hydraulics, press unit, conveying technology, electrics, and safety. Every four years, a major service follows with an extended scope of materials — such as accumulator bladder, pump seal kits, and gasket sets — precisely aligned with your system’s actual operating time.

Building Block 2 · Material Package

Annual service material package

A defined package of spare and wear parts, in accordance with the maintenance manual, is provided ahead of the planned service visit. This means maintenance begins at the service appointment — not the procurement process.

Building Block 3 · Oil Analysis

Professional laboratory oil analysis

Oil analysis is the “blood test” of the hydraulic system. In the laboratory, particle contamination, wear metals, water content, viscosity, additive condition, and the fluid’s remaining usability are assessed, among other factors. Oil cleanliness is classified according to ISO 4406. This allows early pump, cylinder, or valve wear, contamination, and oil aging to be detected before the system reports a fault.

Building Block 4 · Software & Remote

Software, PLC, and remote support

Available machine program updates are installed within the agreed scope. ATM system experts provide support for Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and Mitsubishi controls and can analyze faults and optimize parameters via Smart Recycling Services. The HelpDesk accepts fault reports by phone or email; technical feedback with analysis and — where possible — online diagnostics is provided within 24 hours.

Building Block 5 · Report & Audit

Service report and system audit

After each service visit, you receive a detailed report with measured values, findings, work performed, and recommended actions. Every deficiency is classified by priority and urgency. The documented history supports budget planning, warranty claims, obsolescence management, and the long-term value retention of the system.

Contract · Scope of Services

What the ATM service contract covers

The contract defines the system covered, the scope of services, dedicated points of contact, maintenance intervals, response procedures, the obligations of both parties, and pricing. The standard term is one year and renews in accordance with the contract terms.

Included in the contract

Included in particular are the scheduled system service, the agreed material package, oil analysis, service report, software updates, HelpDesk support, and — as soon as available — access to agreed portal features.

Ordered separately

On-site fault repairs outside the scheduled service visit, repairs following accident, fire, water damage, misuse, or overload, as well as any required rental equipment, are ordered separately. This ensures full transparency about which services are included in the package and which are offered individually.

Benefits · Your Advantages

Your advantages with the ATM service contract

Predictable costs

Regular appointments, defined services, and bundled travel reduce costly express, weekend, and ad hoc call-outs.

Higher system availability

Maintenance windows are scheduled during production breaks; critical wear is detected before failure occurs.

Lower follow-up costs

Minor defects are fixed before they damage main cylinders, guides, pumps, valves, or load-bearing structures.

OEM expertise

Certified ATM technicians know the design tolerances, pressure curves, hydraulics, control software, and optimal factory parameters.

Transparent system condition

Measured values, findings, and recommendations create a reliable basis for maintenance budgeting, spare parts planning, and modernization.

Value retention and operational safety

Original parts, professional installation, fine-tuning, and a complete service history work together as a holistic system.

Cost-Effectiveness · Preventive Instead of Reactive

Preventive instead of reactive: the economic difference

Criterion With ATM service contract Without service contract
Cost structure Predictable, defined services, bundled call-outs Unpredictable, possible express and surcharge costs
Downtime Can be scheduled specifically and reduced through prevention Unplanned, often occurring during high utilization
System status Documented through audit, measured values, and history Often only detectable once a defect occurs
Know-how ATM OEM system experts General maintenance without manufacturer knowledge
Repair risk Early defect resolution limits consequential damage Higher risk of cascading damage

Independent studies show the economic potential of structured, data-based maintenance. However, the actual impact depends on system type, operating hours, load profile, and operational downtime costs. That’s why ATM evaluates the benefits together with you, transparently and specific to your system.

For guidance, here are two real-world example calculations — based on deliberately conservative assumptions over an eight-year period:

Example: Arno®Press AP 350 baling press

For a baling press with a system value of around €930,000, the contract costs over eight years amount to approximately €49,062 — an average of 0.66% of the system value per year. In the model calculation, this results in a net saving of around €21,092 per year, or €168,738 over eight years, an ROI of around 344% per year. The contract pays for itself once it prevents around 8 hours of unplanned downtime per year.

Example: Arno®Brik AB 18 briquetting press

For a briquetting press with a system value of around €780,000, the contract costs over eight years amount to approximately €27,201 — an average of 0.44% of the system value per year. The model calculation shows a net saving of around €14,600 per year, or €116,799 over eight years, an ROI of around 429% per year. Just around 6 hours of prevented downtime per year finance the entire service contract.

Diagnostics · Oil Analysis

Oil analysis: detecting condition before damage occurs

Four typical laboratory findings and what they reveal about the condition of pumps, cylinders, and valves:

Elevated iron or chromium levels

Possible early wear on cylinder rods or guides.

Elevated copper or tin levels

Possible wear on plain bearings or pump components.

Water in the oil

Indicates condensation, inadequate tank ventilation, or leaks in the cooling system.

Altered additives or viscosity

Decreasing additive concentration or altered viscosity indicate thermal stress or advanced oil aging.

A specific action is derived from each finding — for example, a targeted component inspection, bypass filtration, a scheduled pump service, or a condition-based oil change. This avoids unnecessary oil changes as well as costly damage from fluid degradation detected too late.

Safety · Hydraulic Hose Management

Hydraulic hose management for greater safety

Hydraulic hose lines are safety-relevant components and are visually inspected, clearly recorded, and included in the maintenance planning as part of the inspection.

The guideline value

A common technical guideline for hydraulic hose lines is a maximum service life of six years; shorter intervals may be required under high pressure surges, temperatures, vibrations, or multi-shift operation. The manufacturer’s specifications, national regulations, the operator’s risk assessment, and the actual condition of the line are decisive.

Immediate replacement required in the case of

cracks reaching the reinforcement, blistering, kinks or crush points, leaks, fittings working loose, safety-relevant corrosion, or significant embrittlement. Structured hose management helps replace lines in a timely and targeted manner before pressure loss, oil leakage, or unplanned system downtime occurs.
