Baling Presses for Scrap Metal: Greater Efficiency in the Recycling Process
In its original form, scrap metal takes up a great deal of space. Sheet metal, stamping waste, body parts, aluminium profiles or copper scraps are difficult to store, transport and process in a controlled way. This is exactly where powerful baling presses come into play.
They compress loose and bulky metal waste into compact, uniform bales. This allows recycling companies, scrap dealers and manufacturing businesses to optimise their internal workflows, make better use of available storage space and transport material more economically.
What is a baling press?
A baling press is a hydraulically driven recycling machine that compresses various types of metal waste under high pressure. Depending on the design, compaction takes place in two or three dimensions.
The result is dimensionally stable metal bales with defined dimensions. These can be stacked, loaded and transported more easily, and subsequently fed into the melting or further processing stage.
Typical materials for baling include:
- Steel and stainless steel
- Aluminium
- Copper and brass
- Sheet metal and stamping waste
- Body and vehicle parts
- light and medium-weight mixed scrap
- production waste from metalworking companies
Why should companies bale scrap metal?
Baling is far more than a simple reduction in volume. It influences numerous processes across the entire recycling and value chain.
Less space required
Loose sheet metal, profiles and body parts contain large voids. Hydraulic compaction reduces the material to a significantly smaller volume. This allows storage areas to be used more efficiently and larger quantities of material to be stored in the same space.
More efficient transport
Compact, cuboid metal bales can be loaded far more easily and transported in a more space-saving way than loose material. In suitable applications, the uniform bale shape can reduce the effort required for handling and transport by up to 30 percent.
This means more material per truck, less empty space and lower transport costs per tonne.
Better material handling
Uniform bales can be moved specifically with cranes, grabs, conveyor systems or forklifts. This makes material flows clearer and loading processes easier to plan.
Baling also simplifies dosing and feeding into downstream plants.
Optimised further processing
Cleanly separated and compactly baled metals can be fed into melting and processing operations in a more controlled manner. Homogeneous material bales support consistent feeding and can make it easier to market high-quality metal fractions.
Which baling press is suitable for which application?
The requirements for a baling press vary depending on the material, throughput, operating environment and desired bale size. With the Arno®Press, ATM Recyclingsystems offers various machine concepts for different applications.
Arno®Press K: For high scrap volumes and industrial applications
The baling presses of the Arno®Press K series were developed specifically for heavy-duty industrial continuous operation. Depending on the model, compaction takes place in two or three stages.
This allows the material to be processed into compact, partly three-dimensionally compressed bales. The robust welded construction and high-strength wear plates enable use under demanding production conditions.
Typical fields of application include:
- Automotive industry
- Stamping and press shops
- metalworking production companies
- recycling plants with high material volumes
- automated production and conveying lines
The systems can be operated both manually and automatically and integrated into existing production lines. Complementary conveying, weighing, sorting and bale-handling systems make it possible to implement complete material flow solutions.
Arno®Press D: For bulky and large-volume metal parts
The Arno®Press D series is particularly suited to scrap yards, metal dealers and non-ferrous metal operations. One key feature is the hydraulic cutting lid.
This performs two tasks in a single work step: it pre-compresses the material that has been loaded while simultaneously cutting down protruding or bulky parts. This allows sheet metal, copper gutters, aluminium wires and body parts, for example, to be processed efficiently.
Depending on machine size, various additional equipment options are available, including:
- Diesel drive
- Radio remote control
- Undercarriage for mobile use
- Loading crane
- Power generator
- Pre-filling hopper for large-volume material
This allows the machine to be tailored specifically to operational requirements and the respective material stream.
Arno®Press A: Economically compressing vehicle bodies
End-of-life vehicles take up a great deal of storage and transport space. The Arno®Press A was developed specifically to compress vehicle bodies into flat, rectangular bales.
Thanks to standardised dimensions, the pressed bodies can be stacked more easily and transported more economically to the shredding or processing plant. According to ATM, the Arno®Press A 220 achieves an output of up to 30 vehicles per hour.
Typical areas of application include:
- Vehicle recycling operations
- Scrap yards
- Metal processing plants
- mobile recycling solutions
- Preparation of vehicle bodies for shredding plants
What matters when choosing a baling press?
The largest or most powerful machine is not automatically the most economical solution. What matters is that the system fits the existing material stream and operational workflows.
Before making a selection, the following points, among others, should be reviewed:
Material type
Steel sheet, aluminium, copper, production waste and vehicle bodies place different demands on pressing force, press chamber and wear protection.
Material volume
Average and maximum throughput determine the required machine size. Future production increases or seasonal fluctuations should also be taken into account.
Desired bale size
Bale dimensions affect storage, transport, feeding and further processing. They should therefore be matched to the downstream processes.
Stationary or mobile use
Stationary systems with automated material feeding are suitable for fixed production lines. At scrap yards or changing sites, mobile versions with diesel drive, crane and radio remote control can offer advantages.
Degree of automation
Different solutions are possible, ranging from manual operation to a fully automated system with conveying technology, weighing and bale handling.
Energy efficiency and wear
Economical operation does not depend on purchase price alone. Energy requirements, maintenance effort, spare parts availability and the service life of wear components must also be taken into account.
Robust technology for industrial continuous operation
Baling presses are exposed to high forces and abrasive materials in daily operation. A stable machine construction, resilient press chambers and high-quality wear plates are therefore particularly important.
In Arno®Press baling presses, the areas in contact with scrap are lined with high-strength wear plates. Depending on the field of application, various profiles and material grades are available.
The hydraulic system also plays a central role. A two-chamber system supplies the load-dependently controlled hydraulic pumps with filtered, cooled oil. The PZT pump-switching technology regulates the oil volume required for the respective cylinders, thereby reducing the drive power needed.
Baling presses as part of a complete solution
A baling press operates particularly efficiently when it is optimally integrated into the overall material flow. This can include the following components, among others:
- Hinged or drag-chain conveyors
- Dosing and pre-filling systems
- Material scales
- Sorting systems
- Bale discharge systems
- Loading cranes
- automated control and visualisation systems
Combining these components creates a seamless recycling solution – from material infeed through compaction to the removal of the finished metal bale.
Conclusion: Extracting more value from scrap metal
Baling scrap metal reduces volume, simplifies handling and improves the utilisation of storage and transport capacity. At the same time, compact, cleanly separated metal bales can make further processing and marketing of the material easier.
Which baling press is right depends on the type of material, the desired throughput, the mode of operation and the existing processes.
With the Arno®Press, ATM Recyclingsystems develops robust baling solutions for manufacturing companies, scrap yards, metal recyclers and vehicle recyclers. From compact mobile units to powerful, automated systems for industrial continuous operation, the machines can be individually tailored to the respective application.
